Contests

that will engage your students:
The National Art Education Association does not endorse any unsupervised contest or competition in art for elementary or secondary schools. It is the position of this Association that the nature and purposes of contests are often incompatible with the goals and objectives of art education and therefore, careful consideration and evaluation of each such competition should be made by the individual instructor.

Nominate a colleague or mentor!
Why?It feels good to say thanks and even better to be thanked. Sharing resources is survival in teaching. By submitting a nomination you are sharing that individual's accomplishments and ideas with hundreds of other art teachers across the state. Once a person has won a WAEA award they are eligible to apply for NAEA regional or national awards if they so choose. State, regional or national recognition often leads to extra support for art programs locally.
What? The WAEA awards celebrate the special efforts that many of us make to teach and support art education. These efforts may include:
Awards
Nominations for Washington Art Educators of the Year
It is never too early to consider nominating someone for a state or national award. Self-nomination is also acceptable. Consider the characteristics of outstanding art educators. Think about their ability to touch the lives of young children and encourage them to flourish and grow. Consider those who inspire lifelong learning through their actions and example. Consider those
who reach out to others to build strong mutually beneficial partnerships with others to support student learning through visual arts. Consider those who are risk takers and creative thinkers that think not only of ways to solve challenges but how to meet their needs straight on and with a proactive attitude. Think of those who provide thoughtful leadership and inspire
all those around them to say, “yes!” Think of those who work
quietly behind the scenes but have a gift to make things seem seamless and easy even though the challenge may seem impossible. Is this you? Is this someone you know?
We must reach out to educators within other divisions including elementary, middle level, high school, museum educators, as well as others and weave a fabric with multiple levels of experience, color, and texture. We are often the first voice but a very strong and lasting one when shaping experiences that can last a lifetime. I encourage you to share your experiences and look to these other areas and build relationships with other divisions serving learners at different levels .
We all share the same goal of expanding and advancing quality art education for all students.

Who?The nominee must be a member of the Washington Art Education Association, but you do not have to be a member to make a nomination. The Art Educator of the year Award is intended as a ‘career’ award that acknowledges an individual who has consistently contributed to art education over time.
The remaining awards are designated for people working in the area named by the title of the award. Along with immediate colleagues, think about people who have had an impact on your art-life and career.
How?Fill out the nomination form and mail, fax or e-mail it!
The person nominating must also include a short statement at least 1/2 page, regarding the nominee’s involvement in art education and why he/she is deserving of this particular award.
Additional supplementary letters of support or material for your nomination (optional).
When?Submit a nomination TODAY. These awards are only given if someone takes the time to submit a nomination.
