Please write and send photos of all the wonderful ways you honor Youth Art Month (student work, displays, bulletin boards, etc). You may contact us directly or use the attached form. We will compile all activities into the Washington YAM Report to be sent to Youth Art Month national headquarters. We will also send off all information to the NAEA News. Established in 1961, Youth Art Month (YAM) is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art for all children and to encourage public support for quality school art programs. Art education gives students a deeper understanding of multi-cultural values and beliefs, while bringing to life what students learn in other subjects.
YOUTH ART MONTH IDEAS:
- Visit the Frye Museum to view the WAEA Student Exhibition
- Put up a title to a current display bulletin board declaring March as Youth Art Month
- Create a new display celebrating the arts in Washington State
- Ask your principal to mention YAM during announcements
- Arrange for student demonstrations in banks, stores, shopping centers
- Have students paint paper grocery bags from a local store so customers can take art away with them
- Encourage students to wear primary, secondary colors, patterns etc.
- Community store windows painted by students
- Make specialty tags for the faculty to wear during the month of March
- Send letters inviting parents to hang their child’s art work in their place of business
- Have the school and public library feature books on children’s art, art careers etc.
- Create a an art game (trivia, name that artist, Art Jeopardy, etc) for your class
- Add YAM information to your school’s web page
- Arrange Family Fun Art workshops after school or evenings
- Integrate art lessons to all subject areas you teach
- Send artwork to for the Washington State YAM Panel to be displayed at NAEA in Baltimore -

CALL FOR ARTWORK
for the YAM Museum
Every State will once again have an entire Panel Display set up for artwork!
- Please don’t let the display panel for our state be left empty. Let’s show others how hard we have been working, how talented your students are, and how the arts are alive and well in Washington State.
ART GUIDELINES for the YAM Museum are as follows:
1. The National YAM Program is asking each state to gather enough artwork to fill a 3’ x 7’ display panel. Artwork can include original student artwork, copies/photos of student artwork, students’ statements, pictures of displays, pictures of YAM events, theme posters, buttons, etc - anything that can be mounted on your state’s panel display. YAM Chairs are to select the artwork/items for display on your state’s panel.
2. Everything should be matted or mounted and ready for display. Fabric panels will be used and Velcro (tooth side) is recommended for hanging. Remember, artwork will be viewed by all fellow NAEA convention attendees.
3. All Artwork should be sent to Mari Atkinson, 8010 Mukilteo Speedway, Unit 108, Mukilteo, WA 98275 no later than March 24th, 2010. This allows for the selection process and mailing to the Council office by the April 1st deadline. Please Note: Even if you are attending the convention, artwork will not be accepted on-site. If you have electronic files of artwork that you would like to have displayed, please email the files to atkinsonmb@mukilteo.wednet.edu by March 22nd to allow time to print them out.
4. Please label the reverse side of ALL artwork with the students’ names and a RETURN TO Contact Name & Address. All return shipments will be made at the WAEA’s expense.
