ESD 113 has created a network across the region to serve teachers. The vision started over coffee when two WAEA members invited a third and a fourth to daydream how to connect and involve art teachers in the ESD.

Each of the four agreed to contact a quarter of the 45 school districts in ESD 113. The list was divided up and the calls were made. In each of the school districts called, a contact person agreed to pass on the email news of events. The meetings were planned and the messages went out.

In 2004-05, the three meetings focused around museums and culture. Squaxin Island Museum near Shelton, Lewis County Historical Museum in Chehalis, and Nisqually Middle School in Lacey were the venues for the ESD gatherings. The museums offered tours of the displays and conversations with the directors. At Nisqually M.S. Native American Master Carver David shared the history and carving techniques of the totem pole project at the school. Teachers attending the gathering had an opportunity to work with the carver trying our hand with the tools. Clock hours were offered to those attending at least two of the three gatherings.

2005-06 schedule began with a trip to Tahola High School on the Quinalt Reservation. A tour of the school, a review of the art program and viewing of a student mural comprised the agenda. An advocacy presentation by Laura Lynn at Centralia Elementary was the January gathering focus. Touring South Puget Sound Community College’s new Performing Arts rounded out the year.

Each gathering includes discussion about current curriculum, concerns, successes, and future topics for meetings. There is great support for this new network.

Bellevue Art Museum
“Call Me Chairmaker!” is an exhibit not to be missed. Enjoy the varied media and humor of Garry Knox Bennett whose chairs will delight any age.
An exhibit of Ron Ho’s jewelry opened a few days ago. It spans 40 years of his work. The art museum holds 3 hour workshops relating to exhibits. On Sunday, Laurie Hall, led participants in making memory boxes. If interested, ask me about the activity.
Passing the Torch, the state wide student exhibit of jewelry and sculpture, has been tentatively set to open May 5, 2007 at BAM. Awards ceremony and studio tours are May 18. More information later… please encourage jewelry/metals/sculpture teachers to participate.

Henry art gallery is hosting an Open House – I believe it is in November. I will send information later as it is not yet posted on their web site.
