2006 Annual WAEA Student Exhibit in Partnership with Frye Art Museum

"Made out of Paper"

Student of Dan Brown

"I like art because it is a way to express myself without speaking. My art comes from my heart. And that is what drives me to complete my goals."

"Untitled"

Student of Cheryl Carlson

The concept of speech can include, I believe, can be interpreted as vocal, literacy, or otherwise. To abstract the idea of vocalized speeches, I thought of the specific linguistic aspect of protests and the lectures they often include. In this way, talking affects and encourages an enormous crowd, and can inspire political change.

"What do I aspire to?"

Student of Amy Dubin

What do I aspire to? The picture consists of two major parts: the outer monochromatic, dreary, and boring world and the inner world of multifarious, colorful, and exciting thoughts that urge to spread. I was inspired by the American Transcendentalism and Jostein Gaarder’s novel "Sophie’s World", which basically told me to go beyond the usual world and think differently, no matter what they say. The picture expresses many questions, such as; what is the whole purpose of progress; is there something beyond; are we able to reach it; and, are we on the right track at all or are our efforts in vain?

"Tunnel Vision"

Student of Paul Berg

I chose to draw this woman in a tunnel that is not very attractive because it is something that I would never usually draw. I usually get stuck on the stereotype of beautiful people and places and paint or draw those things. I realized that physical beauty is not the only aspect of art. I found that other traits could draw lookers in as well. The new saying is ugly is the new beauty. I titled it tunnel vision because she is in a tunnel and it is easy for artists especially the young ones to get caught up on having to draw things proportional and beautiful. I used Prisma color colored pencils and smoothed and blended everything with a lighter shade.

"Hand in Hand"

Student of Marcia Randall DeBard

I would like my art to speak out. Everyone needs a hand,so give a hand to anyone who needs it.

"Precious Cargo"

Student of Deb Barten

I chose to draw the picture of the Mother and baby because I wanted to draw something that you really had to look at in order to see the whole image. At first glance, you don’t notice the mother and you barely notice the baby. You have to look twice to take in the whole scene.

"Reflections"

Student of Kathleen Hall

What I am trying to achieve in my artwork is a variety of textures. The strengths I see in my work are design, color, and balance. The problem I faced was how to create the chain. I experimented with metal and using leather cord for the remainder of the necklace.

"Together"

Student of Gale Wiebe Riley

Reading together we’ll visit exciting new places.
New knowledge will flow out from us to others.

"Enlightened"

Student of Joye Melby

My piece "Enlightened" was an experiment that happened after a Sunday of nothing better to do than play with a flashlight. My mission was to see the difference a single source of light would make on an image instead of seeing the image flooded in light. What I could see shifted with the movement of light. What you see is exactly what I saw as I sat that Sunday looking in the mirror with a flashlight up to my face.

"The Mark of Kidnap"

Student of Dawn Wyatt

My goal is to persuade my viewers that bad things exist; like the loss of liberty, kidnappings, and torture that are taking place in today's world.

"All eyes on you"

Student of Kathleen Hall

In this piece, I combined many photos of my friend’s eyes. This is something I had never done before, and I feel that usually when this process is done, the effect is not to my liking. However, in this piece, I like the outcome. I feel that I learned a lot of new skills in digital photography, which is my favorite media.

"Colorful"

Student of Susie Jensen and Mike Milligan

I made him out of oil pastels. I liked learning about Indian designs. I made him jumping up the falls.
