Six years ago the WAEA (Washington Art Education Association) held a board meeting at Maryhill Museum of Art. It was perfect timing for the new Curator of Education and resulted in a collaboration now realized as the exhibition “Teachers as Artists.” This yearly exhibition gives focus to art educators as practicing artists themselves and who continually push their own skill to inspire students in Washington and Oregon.

Each year Maryhill Museum chooses a juror who is an expert in art or art education (and is not affiliated with educators in Oregon or Washington). The juror receives electronic images with the artwork’s title, media, and size to choose the artworks that will be hung in the M. J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center. The juror chooses artwork accepted into the exhibition, as well as the awards Best of Show, First, Second, Third Places, and Honorable Mention. In addition, a Curator of Education award recognizes an artwork with an exceptional narrative.
